A recent beta update for WhatsApp’s Android version has revealed a new screen called “Third-party chats,” suggesting that Meta’s encrypted messaging app may soon be compatible with other platforms. The primary objectives of the DMA are to prevent gatekeepers from enforcing unfair terms and to ensure the openness of crucial digital services. While Meta and Microsoft navigate the DMA’s regulations, the European Commission is also investigating Apple’s iMessage and Microsoft’s Bing search engine, Edge browser, and advertising service. The aim of these investigations is to evaluate whether these companies meet the criteria defined by the DMA. If Apple’s iMessage and Microsoft’s services are found to qualify as gatekeepers, they will be subject to the same requirements as Meta, potentially leading to significant changes in their practices and policies.
