Arrowhead Studios, the developer behind the popular co-op game Helldivers 2, recently issued a warning to players about the existence of “fake” versions of the game and other well-known titles. According to a message posted on Discord, the studio revealed that there are currently unauthorized copies of Helldivers 2 being marketed on Steam. These fake versions claim to be developed by Arrowhead Studios, but in reality, they are not affiliated with the company in any way.

Arrowhead Studios’ legal team has taken swift action to address the issue, resulting in the removal of at least two of the fake versions from Steam. The unauthorized copies, which masqueraded as Helldivers 2, were identified as indie games Figularity and Do Not Smile. These imposters changed their names to Helldivers 2, used screenshots from the original game, and credited Arrowhead Game Studios and PlayStation LLC as the developer and publisher, respectively.

In response to the situation, Arrowhead Studios emphasized that the only authentic versions of Helldivers 2 are the official release and the Super Citizen Edition. The studio advised players to verify the release date of the game, which was February 8, 2024, to differentiate between real and fake copies. Arrowhead Studios expressed disappointment and frustration over individuals attempting to deceive players by posing as the company and urged caution to safeguard against potential scams.

Aside from Helldivers 2, other popular games have also been targeted by copycats, including Palworld, Last Epoch, and Escape From Tarkov. These unauthorized versions pose a threat to both players and developers, underscoring the importance of vigilance and accountability within the gaming community.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by developers in combating piracy and fraudulent practices in the digital marketplace. Players are encouraged to exercise caution when purchasing and downloading games, especially from unofficial sources. By staying informed and vigilant, gamers can help protect themselves and support legitimate developers in the fight against counterfeit products.
