Valve recently released the SteamOS preview update, taking it to version 3.6.0, bringing joy to Steam Deck owners. This update includes a plethora of fixes and added features to enhance the overall experience. One of the most notable updates is the graphics driver update, promising “many performance and correctness improvements”. Additionally, the operating system has been moved to a more recent Arch Linux base, along with an update to the Linux kernel.

One of the key highlights of this update is the improved pairing with Apple AirPods, faster Bluetooth connection speeds, better performance and stability in high memory use scenarios, and the ability to wake the device from sleep with Bluetooth devices. The graphics card driver has been upgraded to Mesa 24.1, which has brought about significant performance improvements. While testing Cyberpunk 2077 in demanding areas, users noticed a smoother frame rate, although it is important to note that this update does not turn the Steam Deck into a high-end gaming PC.

Overclocking Controls and Additional Features

For users who enjoy pushing their hardware to the limits, overclocking controls have been added to the BIOS for the Steam Deck LCD. Additionally, users can now set the SD card as the default boot device, catering to the needs of tinkerers. In terms of display enhancements, the update includes Mura Compensation to improve display uniformity and mitigate the “Mura effect”. This feature is particularly beneficial for LCD displays exposed to high temperatures over time. Display color balance has been improved at lower brightness levels, enhancing the viewing experience while maximizing battery life.

In desktop mode, users will now have thumbnail previews for videos in the file browser. The Deck Dock also receives HDMI CEC features, such as TV remote input, TV wake up, and TV input switching. Furthermore, there are compatibility fixes for high refresh rate VRR displays.

Enabling the Preview Channel

The update is currently available for those who have opted into the preview channel. To activate the update, users can navigate to the settings menu, go to the system panel, and select “Preview” from the dropdown box next to “System Update Channel”. This update brings a plethora of quality-of-life improvements, compatibility enhancements, and a slight performance boost for Steam Deck owners.

While the update is exciting, it is worth noting that a version that can be used on other hardware is not yet available. Despite this limitation, the latest SteamOS preview update offers a range of exciting features and improvements, showcasing Valve’s commitment to enhancing the Steam Deck experience.
