Ubisoft has released the gameplay trailer for its upcoming open-world game, Star Wars: Outlaws. The game was officially announced with a cinematic trailer yesterday and is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In the game, players will take on the role of Kay Vess, a Han Solo-like character, and her alien dog, Nix.

Gameplay Trailer

The recently released 10-minute gameplay trailer showcases some of the game’s features, including cover shooting, speeder bike chases, and spaceship combat. Players will explore various planets, take on jobs for the underworld, and try to outrun the Empire.

Gameplay Features

Star Wars: Outlaws features recognizable aliens such as Trandoshans, Rodians, and Mon Calamari, along with a surly droid co-pilot. The game’s transitions between action setpieces and cinematic cutscenes are reminiscent of the popular Uncharted series. However, the game’s DNA is clearly that of Ubisoft Massive, the studio responsible for The Division 1 and 2.

Although the gameplay trailer shows that Star Wars: Outlaws has the potential to be a great game, the characters seem blandly earnest at this point. However, the game’s concept of being a scruffy, rogueish criminal exploring planets with a pet is a much clearer fantasy than certain other science fiction games showcased in the past week. Overall, if the characters are developed well, Star Wars: Outlaws could be a hit for Ubisoft.
