According to new data from CD Projekt Red (CDPR), The Witcher franchise has sold over 75 million copies, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt accounting for over 50 million of those sales. This makes it one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, putting it in the same league as games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which have sold over 53 million copies.

The Future of the Franchise

With CDPR’s release of a next-gen update for The Witcher 3 in December, it’s likely that the franchise’s sales numbers will continue to grow substantially. The studio is also working on a number of other Witcher games, including a remake of the first Witcher game, a new Witcher trilogy, and a spinoff codenamed “Project Sirius.” It’s worth noting that CDPR recently announced it is reassessing the development of “Project Sirius.”

Cyberpunk 2077 and the Future of CDPR

While CDPR’s latest release, Cyberpunk 2077, had a rocky launch, the studio has worked to turn the game around with updates and patches. The company released a next-gen update for the game in February 2022, and has announced a major expansion for the game called Phantom Liberty, which stars Idris Elba. The expansion will be featured at Summer Game Fest’s invite-only Play Days event in June.

The Witcher Franchise’s Expansion Beyond Video Games

The Witcher franchise has also expanded beyond video games, with a successful Netflix series based on the games and books. Netflix has already renewed the series for a fifth season, even though the third season has yet to be released. However, the third season will mark the end of Henry Cavill’s run as Geralt, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role starting in season four.

Overall, The Witcher franchise’s continued success and expansion into other media demonstrates its enduring popularity and cultural significance. With new games and other projects in the works, it’s clear that CDPR and its fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
