Long-serving Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle has confirmed the iconic monster-fighter will return in upcoming sequel, The Witcher 4, although he’s hinted at a smaller role. For years now, it’s been speculated the next Witcher game will shift focus to Geralt’s apprentice Ciri, who evolved to become a fully-fledged Witcher at the end of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cockle has seemingly confirmed The Witcher 4 will pick up this thread, with Geralt likely taking a backseat, as Ciri explores her new strength as a Witcher. This shift in focus could bring a fresh perspective to the game and open up new possibilities for storytelling.

While Cockle claimed he hadn’t read any script yet and so could be “lying through [his] teeth”, it’s likely he has insight that many others would lack. CD Projekt is currently developing The Witcher 4, and Cockle is likely to be part of this development sooner, rather than later. However, he stopped short of outright confirming Ciri would be the focus of the game. Based on the events of Wild Hunt, Ciri is the most likely candidate. After her journey to becoming a Witcher in the previous game, it would make sense for her to take on a more prominent role in the upcoming sequel.

Prior to the release of Wild Hunt, CD Projekt made it clear that Geralt’s story would wind down in the third installment. Indeed, at the end of the game, players are given choices that determine Geralt’s fate, whether he settles down with Yennefer or Triss, or continues his adventures alone. It’s hinted that Geralt may be at the end of his time as a Witcher, and the next game could see him in a semi-retired state, making appearances in a reduced capacity. This would mark a significant shift from the previous games where Geralt was the central character.

With the focus possibly shifting to Ciri in The Witcher 4, there are numerous possibilities for exciting storylines that could be explored. Ciri’s journey as a Witcher, her relationships with other characters, and her continued fight against threats could provide rich material for a new game. Additionally, introducing new characters or bringing back familiar faces could add depth to the narrative and keep players engaged. It remains to be seen how CD Projekt will handle the transition from Geralt to Ciri as the primary protagonist, but fans are eagerly awaiting more news.

While the confirmation of Geralt’s return in The Witcher 4 is exciting, the hints at his reduced role and the potential focus on Ciri present an intriguing shift in the series. With Doug Cockle’s insights and the groundwork laid in Wild Hunt, it seems likely that Ciri will take on a more prominent role in the upcoming sequel. This change in direction could provide a fresh perspective and breathe new life into The Witcher franchise. Fans will have to wait and see how CD Projekt navigates this transition and what adventures await in The Witcher 4.
