The DIY controller consists of a soccer-ball-like structure that houses an optical mouse to detect movement. To ensure consistent tracking, Tilley added a deodorant roller underneath the ball to stabilize its height and movement. The controller’s functionality relies on the rotation of the deodorant ball, simulating mouse movement as if it were gliding over a surface.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Tilley’s creation is the 3D-printed model of AiAi, the iconic mascot from Super Monkey Ball. The attention to detail in replicating AiAi in a ball form is commendable, adding an element of authenticity to the controller design. By incorporating hinged legs and mount points for AiAi’s knees, he aims to enhance the controller’s visual appeal and functionality. Additionally, the addition of a trailing wheel with a crank mechanism will create the illusion of AiAi running inside the ball as it rolls, adding another layer of immersion to the gaming experience.
