In the realm of video games, it’s always refreshing to come across something that breaks the mold and offers a truly unique experience. Mouse, an upcoming first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Fumi Games, seems to be just that. Drawing inspiration from the rubber hose animation of the 1930s and combining it with the intense gameplay of classic shooters like Doom, Mouse promises to deliver a stylish and bloody adventure unlike anything we’ve seen before.
When it comes to visuals, Mouse is a feast for the eyes. Taking cues from the Fleischer-style cartoons popular in the 1930s, the game features anthropomorphic gangster mice armed with tommy guns. The player, too, is well-equipped with an arsenal of weapons ranging from revolvers to sniper rifles, all presented in a stunning and immersive art style. Even the character animations, such as the motion of their gloved hand mimicking a gun, add an extra layer of charm to the overall experience.
Mouse doesn’t stop at just looking great; it also incorporates environmental hazards reminiscent of classic cartoons. In one scene, we see a precariously dangling piano being dropped on enemies. The game also offers moments of respite and exploration, with players navigating dark tunnels with a flashlight, speaking to characters, and collecting trading cards featuring beloved mouse baseball stars like Brie Ruth. All of this is accompanied by a jazzy soundtrack that perfectly complements the game’s vibe.
While Mouse may bear a resemblance to Disney classics, it takes a more mature and gruesome approach to its gameplay. Despite its black-and-white aesthetic, the game doesn’t shy away from bloody violence. Heads pop off in spurts of blood, and defeated enemies turn into charred matchsticks. The monochrome palette adds to the noir-fueled storyline of a private investigator encountering gangs and mobsters, seeking both justice and revenge. The gameplay trailer even showcases challenging boss battles, including a Robotnik-style fixed turret with its own health bar split into three segments.
A Promising Future for Mouse
With its amalgamation of Cuphead’s stunning visuals and Doom’s intense gameplay, Mouse shows incredible promise. Furthermore, the addition of power-ups and the setting reminiscent of the early 19th century brings a touch of BioShock to the equation. While Fumi Games has yet to announce a definitive release date, they aim to launch Mouse on Steam by 2025. Gamers eagerly await the release of this stylish and bloody fusion of classic cartoon aesthetics and FPS action.
