The Sims 4 has long been known for its ability to provide millennials with the unattainable fantasy of owning their own home. However, a new expansion pack set to launch on December 7th, called For Rent, aims to bring players closer to reality. With the introduction of multi-family lots, players can now construct apartment buildings and rent out spare basements, allowing them to experience the trials and tribulations of being a landlord or a tenant.
According to the expansion’s official site, property owner Sims have two options – they can either choose to be present property managers, living among their tenants, or they can reside in a separate residence while generating income from multiple property investments. However, they must be cautious, as failing to maintain high Unit Ratings can result in a Tenant Revolt. While it is unclear what the consequences of a revolt are, it appears that it may simply lead to tenants moving out, allowing landlords to replace them without addressing any underlying issues.
The expansion also introduces “residential rental lots,” offering players the flexibility to arrange multiple families in various ways. Alongside apartments and basement rentals, players can now also build duplexes to keep two families close together. The idea of constructing granny flats in the backyard may sound appealing, but the potential disputes and conflicts over noise levels could dampen the fun.
In addition to the new gameplay features, the For Rent expansion includes a new region called Tomarang. This area features a botanical garden, Spirit House, animal sanctuary, and a night market, providing an immersive and diverse environment for Sims to explore. The addition of this region adds depth and variety to the gameplay experience, giving players new places to visit and activities to engage in.
As someone who has experienced the ups and downs of renting for most of the last two decades, I must admit that the idea of placing as many virtual landlords into pools and removing the ladders brings a small sense of gratification. This tongue-in-cheek remark highlights the frustration and power dynamics often experienced in the real world rental market, allowing players to release some pent-up frustration in a virtual setting.
Interestingly, apartment living seems to be a core element of the upcoming installment of The Sims series, currently known as Project Rene. This implies that the popularity of the For Rent expansion and its focus on multi-family living has influenced the development of the next game in the franchise. As players continue to embrace the idea of shared living arrangements, it will be intriguing to see how this concept evolves in future iterations of The Sims.
