NASA representatives have confirmed a contingency plan to bring astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams home from the International Space Station early next year. This plan involves utilizing SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission as a backup option if the astronauts are unable to depart aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that initially brought them to the ISS.
The Boeing Starliner faced several challenges during its crewed launch on June 5th, including thruster failures, helium leaks, and delays in docking with the ISS. These issues not only resulted in the astronauts being stranded in orbit for over two months but also raised concerns about the safety and reliability of the Starliner spacecraft.
Boeing’s Starliner program has been plagued by significant delays and cost overruns, with the crewed test flight originally scheduled to take place seven years ago. This track record of setbacks has raised questions about Boeing’s ability to deliver on its commitments and fulfill its obligations to NASA.
Tests conducted at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility revealed that deformed Teflon seals may have played a role in the Starliner’s thruster failures. However, a final decision on whether to use the Starliner for the astronauts’ return journey is not expected until mid-August, leaving the astronauts in limbo as officials assess the situation.
Despite NASA’s preference for using the Starliner spacecraft, a backup plan has been put in place that would involve SpaceX sending just two astronauts to the ISS aboard a late September Crew-9 launch. This plan would free up two spots for Williams and Wilmore to return to Earth in February of next year, while Boeing reconfigures the Starliner for an uncrewed return mission.
The challenges faced by the Boeing Starliner and the uncertainties surrounding its safety and reliability have forced NASA to consider alternative options for bringing astronauts back from the ISS. While the preference is still to use the Starliner, the backup plan involving SpaceX highlights the need for contingency measures in the face of unexpected setbacks and delays. Moving forward, it will be crucial for all parties involved to address the issues with the Starliner and ensure that future missions are conducted with the utmost care and attention to detail.
