When it comes to 1440p gaming, many enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for sub-$400 graphics cards to truly push the boundaries. Unfortunately, the original AMD Radeon RX 7600 failed to meet these expectations. Priced at $269, the RX 7600 only offered 8GB of memory, leaving gamers wanting more. However, AMD is now launching an upgraded version, the Radeon RX 7600 XT, with an enticing promise to take on 1440p gaming.
One of the significant improvements in the Radeon RX 7600 XT is the doubling of its memory capacity. While the RX 7600 shipped with 8GB, the XT model boasts an impressive 16GB of memory. This upgrade raises hopes for better performance in higher resolution gaming. Surprisingly, the RX 7600 XT features more memory than its higher-priced counterpart, the RX 7700 XT, which only offers 12GB.
Despite the memory upgrade, other technical specifications of the RX 7600 XT have remained the same as its predecessor. It still retains 32 compute units, 2048 stream processors, and a 128-bit memory bus. AMD has, however, made some efforts to optimize performance. The base and boost clock speeds have been improved, and the total board power has been increased to 190 watts, compared to the original RX 7600’s 165 watts.
According to AMD’s own data, the RX 7600 XT should deliver 60fps and above at 1440p in games such as Starfield, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Forza Horizon 5. While this suggests that the card is capable of handling 1440p gaming, it seems that it may still be more suited for 1080p gaming based on the data provided by AMD. Only real-world tests and full reviews will confirm whether the RX 7600 XT truly meets expectations in the 1440p gaming category.
In addition to showcasing the RX 7600 XT’s capabilities, AMD has also compared it to Nvidia’s $299 RTX 4060. The data shared by AMD demonstrates that the RX 7600 XT competes with the RTX 4060 at both 1080p and 1440p in a handful of games. However, it is important to note that these comparisons are based on AMD’s own data, and thorough third-party reviews will be necessary to assess the true performance of these two cards side by side.
The Radeon RX 7600 XT will be available on January 24th, with a price tag of $329. It can be purchased from various board partners, including Acer, ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX. Overall, while the RX 7600 XT offers some improvements over its predecessor, it remains to be seen whether it can truly deliver on the promise of 1440p gaming. Enthusiasts will eagerly await comprehensive reviews to determine if AMD has finally produced a sub-$400 card that can compete in the higher resolution gaming market.
