Nicolas Cage, the star of the popular National Treasure movies, recently crushed the hopes of fans by stating that there will be no National Treasure 3. In an interview with ScreenRant, Cage made it clear that Disney is not the place to look for any treasure-related content. As disappointing as this news may be, it seems that the beloved franchise may have come to an end with its last installment, National Treasure: Book of Secrets back in 2007.

Following the end of the film series, Disney attempted to revive the National Treasure universe through a TV show called National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+. Although the show brought back familiar faces like Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel, it failed to resonate with audiences and was ultimately canceled after just one season. This lackluster response hinted that perhaps the magic of the National Treasure series was fading.

Despite their absurd plots, the National Treasure movies garnered a dedicated fanbase and featured a star-studded cast including Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, Helen Mirren, and more. Together, the two films raked in nearly $1 billion at the box office, showcasing their commercial success. However, even with such financial gains, the franchise struggled to expand beyond the big screen.

Producer Jason Reed acknowledged that while the movies were popular in their own right, Disney failed to capitalize on transforming National Treasure into a full-fledged franchise with merchandise and theme park attractions. This missed opportunity highlighted the challenges of turning a successful film series into a multi-platform brand that generates revenue through various avenues. National Treasure, despite its cinematic achievements, fell short in this aspect.

In the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood, the fate of beloved franchises like National Treasure remains uncertain. While rumors of a potential National Treasure 3 surfaced in 2020, they quickly dissipated, leaving fans wondering if they will ever see the adventurous Ben Gates back on the big screen. As Nicolas Cage’s recent words echo in the minds of fans, it appears that the treasure hunt may have reached its conclusion, leaving behind fond memories of a thrilling and entertaining film series that captured the hearts of many.
