Mark Zuckerberg, the executive of Meta, has announced that the Meta Quest 3 will be released this autumn. The Quest 3 is a follow-up to the Oculus/Meta Quest 2 and is a full-on mixed reality kit. It offers both AR gaming and traditional VR play. The Quest 3 is powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, has a higher display resolution, thinner optics, and full-color passthrough. The wireless controllers have also been redesigned and will offer haptic feedback as standard. The Quest 3 will be backward compatible and will require a Meta account to use.

The Cost

The Meta Quest 3 is not going to be cheap, with a starting price of £500 / $500 for the 128GB version, which is £100 more than the current Quest 2 pricing. However, this is still less than the cost of the HTC Vive XR Elite headset. The price gap will widen as Meta has confirmed that the old model, Quest 2, will be reduced to £300 / $300 on June 4th.

The Features

The Meta Quest 3 is a significant upgrade from Quest 2. The Quest 3 is powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon chip which is much faster. The display resolution has not been revealed yet but is confirmed to be higher than Quest 2’s 1832×1920 per-eye optics. The optics will be thinner, reducing the headset bulk. The full-color passthrough is another upgrade, which will enable the player to see the outside world in color, unlike Quest 2 that only allowed the player to see the outside world in grayscale.

The wireless controllers have also been redesigned, ditching the big plastic halos and adding haptic feedback as standard, which was previously only available on Meta’s premium Quest Pro controllers. The Quest 3 will also be backwards compatible, which means that anything that could be played on Quest 2 can be played on Quest 3. The Quest 3 will require a Meta account to use, which will involve handing over personal information.

The Conclusion

Mark Zuckerberg has promised more details about the Meta Quest 3 at Meta’s Connect conference on September 27th. The full specs and release date info will be revealed at the conference. The Quest 3 will be a full-on mixed reality kit, enabling both AR gaming and traditional VR play. The wireless controllers have been redesigned, and the Quest 3 will be backward compatible. The cost of the Quest 3 will be £500 / $500 for the 128GB version, and the old model, Quest 2, will be reduced to £300 / $300 on June 4th. Overall, the Meta Quest 3 will be a significant upgrade from Quest 2, and it will be interesting to see how it performs when it is released in autumn.
