Welcome back to another edition of Box Art Brawl! In the previous edition, we asked our viewers to choose their favorite design between the two regional cover art options for Beyond Good and Evil. The European cover won with 59% of the votes, while North America took 41%.
This week, we’re featuring The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, a 2007 DS title that has been known to be a divisive game for the series. Many people have placed it in the lower section of their Zelda rankings. However, it still holds a special place in our hearts as a Wind Waker sequel.
Comparing the Cover Art
The cover art this week presents an interesting battle where the European and Japanese designs have close similarities, standing in contrast to the North American design. When we combine the similarities, we are left with a good old-fashioned duel on our hands.
The European and Japanese cover art both feature sea exploration elements, which is a significant part of the game. The focus is on Link, Captain Linebeck, and their boat. The North American art, on the other hand, throws the sea iconography out of the window and replaces it with a treasure map-like design. The spooky shape of the Ghost Ship looms behind Link and Linebeck, surrounded by brown. The nautical theme definitely carries over, but it may not be as clear in hammering home its Wind Waker ties.
