Recently leaked images on social media platforms have revealed exciting updates to the Nest Learning Thermostat lineup. The fourth-generation model appears to have a more curved display compared to its predecessor, the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. The physical dial remains a key feature, but the latest model may introduce a touchscreen display for added convenience. One noticeable addition is a new icon with three wavy lines, hinting at a possible indoor air quality monitoring feature – a first for Nest thermostats.
Compatibility and Accessories
The leaked images also showcase new temperature sensors, along with the Nest E and Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen). Interestingly, the Nest Thermostat (2020) is absent from the pictures, possibly due to incompatibility with Nest’s room sensors. The redesigned Nest Temperature Sensor (second-gen) is wall-mountable or can be placed on a table, allowing for flexible placement options. These sensors are priced at $39 each, or three for $99, and boast a three-year battery life.
Further investigation by tech enthusiasts has uncovered FCC filings suggesting that the new Nest thermostat may incorporate Google’s Soli radar technology. This feature enables the thermostat to light up its display when approached and detect presence in the room, enhancing the overall user experience. While the addition of Soli radar is a significant upgrade, the absence of a Thread radio in the thermostat is somewhat surprising, as this technology was initially developed for the original Nest thermostat.
Smart Home Standard and Pricing
One notable aspect of the current Nest Learning Thermostat is its ability to adapt to users’ heating and cooling patterns, offering a more personalized experience compared to older models. However, the lack of support for Matter, a smart home standard backed by Google, is a glaring omission. The cheaper Nest Thermostat, on the other hand, does support Matter, making it a more future-proof option for tech-savvy consumers.
As anticipation builds for a major Google hardware event scheduled for August 13th, it remains to be seen whether these leaked images and details are indeed accurate.
