In the ever-evolving landscape of computer hardware, it is remarkable how the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 has managed to maintain its popularity nearly four years after its initial release. Despite the advancements introduced by the Ada Lovelace architecture, this mid-range graphics card continues to be a sought-after choice for gamers and enthusiasts alike. What makes it even more exciting is that third-party vendors are still producing new models of the RTX 3060 with reduced prices, thanks to a consistent supply of chips from Nvidia.
According to a report by Videocardz, Nvidia has expressed its commitment to ship RTX 3060 chips until at least the first quarter of the following year. While this news may not come as a surprise, considering the enduring popularity of the card, it reaffirms Nvidia’s dedication to providing high-quality GPUs to the market. However, it is worth noting that the RTX 40-series has faced criticism for its high price points and minimal performance improvements compared to its predecessors.
When the RTX 3060 was initially launched, it carried a price tag of $329. This, however, was during the pandemic, a period when all PC components experienced inflated prices. Now, a quick search on Amazon reveals RTX 3060 models available for as low as $289, making it a more affordable option. In contrast, the newer RTX 4060 starts at around $300. With only an $11 difference between the two, it raises the question of why third-party vendors would continue to produce new models based on an older chip.
Nvidia’s Strategy: An Attractive Offer
One can speculate that Nvidia is selling the older Ampere GPUs at an enticing price, which would explain the willingness of board partners to create new RTX 3060 models with a lower MSRP. This strategy may also be a response to the success of AMD’s last-generation Radeon RX 6000 cards, particularly the RX 6600 and RX 6700 XT, which are available for around $190 and $310, respectively. Therefore, a price reduction for the RTX 3060, perhaps in the range of $260, would undoubtedly be well-received by consumers.
Another factor contributing to the extension of the RTX 3060’s lifespan is the absence of the RTX 4050. Currently, the lowest-tier Ada Lovelace desktop card is the RTX 4060, which utilizes the same GPU (the AD107) as the laptop RTX 4050. However, the mobile version of this GPU features 512 fewer shaders, a reduced amount of L2 cache, and one less memory controller, resulting in a 96-bit memory bus and 6GB of VRAM. If Nvidia were to release a desktop RTX 4050, priced at around $200 to $240 and using the same chip as the laptop variant, it would likely struggle to differentiate itself from the previous RTX 3050 without significant improvements in clock speeds. Thus, the availability of an affordable RTX 3060 presents an elegant solution. Nvidia can allocate all AD107 chips to produce the RTX 4060, laptop RTX 4050, and RTX 2000 workstation products, while board partners gain access to reasonably priced GA106 chips and can create an entirely new series of intriguing models for different markets.
Although the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 may be four years old and lack support for DLSS with Frame Generation, it remains a reliable and formidable graphics card. Gamers can still benefit from technologies such as FSR or DLSS upscaling to enhance their gaming experience, either by achieving higher frame rates or enjoying more visually stunning graphics. Particularly for 1080p gaming, the RTX 3060 is challenging to surpass in terms of performance and affordability.
While it is unlikely that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 will remain relevant for another four years, it is intriguing to consider whether it will still be a topic of discussion in the following year. Its enduring popularity, combined with the continuous support from third-party vendors, highlights the lasting legacy of this mid-range powerhouse.
