Alderon Games, the developer behind the popular dinosaur MMO Path of Titans, recently made headlines by announcing a switch from Intel 13th and 14th Gen-based servers to AMD. The decision was prompted by what the company’s founder, Matthew Cassells, described as “significant” instability issues that have plagued the game’s servers. According to Cassells, the crashes have been so severe that they have resulted in thousands of reported incidents and have even led to CPU degradation over time.

While Alderon Games has pointed to Intel processors as the root cause of the server crashes, RAD Game Tools, a company specializing in Unreal Engine decompression tools, has offered a different perspective. According to RAD Game Tools, only a small fraction of the affected processors are actually causing the reported issues. This conflicting information has added a layer of complexity to the situation and has left many in the tech community scratching their heads.

In response to the allegations made by Alderon Games and others, Intel has attempted to address the situation by pointing to potential causes such as improper overclocking settings on motherboards. However, as some experts have pointed out, this explanation does not fully account for the crashes seen on server hardware, which should theoretically be more stable. Additionally, a recent statement from a Warframe developer claiming that the majority of crashes were due to driver failures in Intel’s 13th and 14th Gen processors has only added to the confusion.

The Path Forward

As the tech community continues to grapple with the issue of server instability linked to Intel processors, it is clear that more investigation and collaboration are needed to identify the true cause of the problem. Whether it be through further testing, firmware updates, or hardware replacements, finding a solution is crucial to ensuring the stability and reliability of gaming servers moving forward. Only time will tell how this saga unfolds and what impact it will have on both gamers and developers alike.
