This amount of trash is enough to circle the Earth more than 200 times, primarily in the form of plastic air pillows. What’s even more alarming is that this figure represents a nearly 10 percent increase from the previous year. While the company claims a reduction in plastic packaging globally, the US remains a significant outlier in this regard.
One of the most troubling aspects of this situation is the lack of transparency surrounding Amazon’s plastic waste. Additionally, Amazon does not account for all the plastic waste generated by orders fulfilled by third-party sellers.
Amazon’s Response
In response to Oceana’s report, Amazon’s vice president of mechatronics and sustainable packaging, Pat Lindner, dismissed the findings as misleading and inaccurate. He highlighted the company’s efforts to eliminate plastic delivery packaging from US automated fulfillment centers. While progress has been made in Europe and India, the transition away from single-use plastic bags in the US has been slower.
