In the year 2024, Sonic fans have a lot to look forward to. With the upcoming release of Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Switch in Autumn, as well as the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie set to debut on 20th December, it’s clear that big things are in store for the beloved blue hedgehog. Additionally, fans will also be treated to a dedicated Knuckles series on 26th April, which will be available on Paramount+.

Franchise producer Toby Ascher recently shared some insights with Paste Magazine about the decision to expand the Sonic universe into television with the Knuckles series. Ascher explained that delving into television allows for more in-depth character studies and the opportunity to further develop supporting characters. By leveraging these smaller projects, the studio aims to lay the groundwork for the Sonic movies to become ‘Avengers-level’ events, with a wide array of characters and interconnected storylines.

Ascher also drew parallels between the upcoming Knuckles series and the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, likening it to Sega’s Sonic 3 & Knuckles release from 1994. Just as players could combine Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles on the Mega Drive/Genesis console to create a complete gaming experience, the Knuckles series and the third Sonic movie work in tandem to provide fans with a cohesive narrative universe.

Despite some skepticism about comparing the Sonic movies to the Avengers franchise, the success of the Sonic films cannot be denied. Paramount Pictures has seen tremendous financial success with the Sonic movies, with the second installment grossing over $400 million worldwide. In fact, the Sonic movie series held the title of the highest-grossing video game movie in the US until The Super Mario Bros. Movie claimed the top spot.

As fans eagerly await the release of the Knuckles series and the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, it’s clear that the Sonic franchise is in a period of expansion and innovation. With a focus on character development and interconnected storytelling, Sonic continues to evolve and capture the hearts of audiences worldwide. Toby Ascher’s vision for the Sonic universe as ‘Avengers-level’ events may just prove to be the key to unlocking even greater success for the beloved blue hedgehog.
