The latest update to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology suite, known as FSR 3.1, has brought significant improvements to five games from Sony. Titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the two Spider-Man games have now been patched to incorporate the new system. With an enhanced shader-based upscaler and decoupled frame generation, PC gamers can now enjoy a boost in performance with better-looking results than ever before.

When AMD initially announced the third generation of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) with the launch of its Radeon RX 7000-series GPUs, the focus was on a shader-based frame generation system. However, the lack of an upgraded upscaler left many PC gamers disappointed. The visuals produced by FSR 2.2, while effective in increasing frame rates, often fell short in comparison to Nvidia’s DLSS Super Resolution technology.

One of the most significant changes in FSR 3.1 is the improvement in the shader algorithm for the upscaler. According to AMD, the new system offers improved temporal stability, reduced flickering and shimmering, enhanced ghosting reduction, and better detail preservation compared to its predecessor. This upgrade is evident in a comparison video released by AMD and further analyzed by tech YouTuber Daniel Owen, who also compared the new system to Nvidia’s DLSS.

Specific Game Improvements

In titles like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, the benefits of FSR 3.1 are immediately noticeable. The new upscaler excels in areas where the old system struggled, providing a smoother visual experience with less flickering and shimmering, especially during fast-paced movements or detailed character animations. Additionally, FSR 3.1 introduces a decoupled frame generator, allowing for more flexibility in choosing upscalers for different graphics cards.

With the full release of FSR 3.1, additional games like Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man Remastered, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have been patched to integrate the updated technology. The upcoming port of God of War: Ragnarok is also slated to receive the new version soon. AMD has made strides in optimizing the FSR software package for developers, adding support for Vulkan and the Xbox platform to ensure broad implementation in future game releases. The public release of the updated SDK next month will shed light on the improvements made to enhance the visual quality of the FSR system.
