A team of researchers has discovered a set of attacks, known as “VoltSchemer”, that can manipulate a wireless charger to cause serious damage to mobile devices and even nearby objects.

One of the attacks identified by the researchers involves manipulating the voltage of the wireless charger with a noise signal, which disrupts the communication between the charger and the device being charged. This interference can prevent the charger from detecting when a device is overcharging, leading to the device being pumped with power at a dangerous rate. During testing, a Samsung S8 reached a temperature of 170°C, posing a significant risk of overheating and potential damage to the device.

Implications for Device Safety

Another concerning aspect of VoltSchemer attacks is the ability to bypass Qi-charging safety standards, allowing large amounts of energy to transfer to objects near the charger. This includes USB sticks, SSD drives, car key fobs, NFC chips used in payment cards, and even paper clips. In testing, paper clips reached temperatures of 280°C, causing them to scorch the paper they were attached to. The most alarming result was the explosion of a car key fob due to excessive heat, highlighting the potential dangers posed by these attacks.

Additionally, the researchers demonstrated the ability to inject voice commands into a device through a transmitted noise signal emitted over a charging station’s range. While this type of attack has limitations and requires specific conditions to be successful, it raises concerns about the security of voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant. The potential for unauthorized access and manipulation of devices through this method is troubling and underscores the need for enhanced security measures.

Call for Increased Device Security

The purpose of these tests is not to provide a blueprint for malicious attacks, but to prompt manufacturers to improve the security of wireless charging technology. The researchers shared their findings with the manufacturers of the charging stations used in the study, urging them to address vulnerabilities and prevent potential misuse of their products.
