In a shocking turn of events, 18-year-old Brendan Depa was sentenced to five years in state prison for brutally assaulting a high school teaching assistant over a Nintendo Switch. The incident, which took place at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida, was captured on video and garnered widespread attention due to the violent nature of the attack.

The video footage shows Depa pushing the teaching assistant, Joan Naydich, to the ground in a school hallway before repeatedly kicking and punching her. The attack was described as senseless physical violence, with Depa screaming obscenities and spitting on Naydich before and during the assault. Circuit Judge Terence Perkins highlighted the severity of the attack, stating that Naydich was knocked unconscious when she landed on the hallway floor, and Depa proceeded to kick and strike her more than 15 times.

Following his five-year prison sentence, Depa will also serve 15 years of probation upon his release. The judge emphasized Depa’s lack of remorse for his actions, further adding to the severity of the punishment. Despite arguments from his defense regarding his autism spectrum disorder and his mother’s criticisms of the sentence, the Assistant State Attorney advocated for a substantial punishment, pointing out that Depa’s actions nearly resulted in Naydich’s death.

Naydich, who suffers from PTSD and other long-term impacts as a result of the assault, highlighted the significant personal and professional consequences she has faced. The attack not only left her physically injured but also traumatized, affecting her mental health and well-being. The emotional and psychological toll of the incident cannot be understated, as it has had a lasting impact on Naydich’s life.

While Depa has the right to appeal the sentence, he is prohibited from having any contact with Naydich and must remain 500 feet away from her home and workplace. The consequences of his actions are far-reaching, not only affecting his own future but also leaving a lasting impact on the victim and those around her. The case serves as a stark reminder of the destructive consequences of violence, especially over something as trivial as a gaming console.
