Sandbox games have always been known for their inherent chaos, and Streets of Fortuna is no exception. This upcoming sandbox RPG takes players to an original historical-ish city inspired by Constantinople around 500 AD. In this sprawling go-anywhere, do-anything open world, players are set loose with no class or job system to follow. Instead, they can focus on improving specific skills that could lead them to become anything from a blacksmith to a trader to even a priest or a thief. The possibilities are endless in this dynamic and unpredictable world.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Streets of Fortuna is the procedurally-generated city full of a thousand individually simulated citizens and communities. These citizens react to the player’s actions, whether it’s guards chasing them down for stealing, potential customers for their goods or targets for wooing or assassinating. The city is alive with possibilities, and players will have to navigate through its intricacies to survive and thrive.
Developed by Kitfox Games, Streets of Fortuna draws inspiration from the detailed world created by procedural generation in games like Dwarf Fortress. In fact, Kitfox Games enlisted the help of Tarn Adams from Bay 12, a co-creator of Dwarf Fortress, to design, polish, and playtest this ambitious sim game. The developers aim to capture the essence of “emergent chaos” in Streets of Fortuna, allowing players to witness stories unfold as the world reacts to their every action.
Streets of Fortuna has been in development for two years and was recently revealed during the PC Gaming Show. While there is no set release date yet, Kitfox Games promises that there is still a lot of work to be done before the game hits Steam. In addition, the developers have plans for regular updates post-launch to delve even deeper into the fictional world of Streets of Fortuna, exploring elements such as politics and more, beyond the default experience of surviving as a thief on the streets.
Streets of Fortuna promises to be a sandbox RPG like no other, offering players a chance to immerse themselves in a vibrant and dynamic world where chaos reigns supreme. With its unique gameplay mechanics, procedurally-generated city, and the influence of games like Dwarf Fortress, Streets of Fortuna is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of sandbox and simulation games. Keep an eye out for this ambitious title as it continues to evolve and expand in the coming months.
