As Nvidia and AMD prepare to launch gaming laptops with AI Copilot Plus features, the competition in the tech industry intensifies. At Computex, Nvidia hinted at the upcoming release of “RTX AI PC” laptops from Asus and MSI that will incorporate Copilot Plus PC capabilities. These laptops will feature GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC functionalities.
Nvidia’s announcement also revealed that the new laptops will come equipped with AMD’s latest Strix CPUs. While AMD has yet to provide detailed information on these laptop CPUs, Nvidia’s briefing suggested that the first AMD-powered Copilot Plus PCs may not immediately receive Microsoft’s round of AI features. However, Nvidia assured that these Windows 11 AI PCs will receive a free update to Copilot+ PC experiences when they become available.
In the race to dominate the AI-powered tasks on laptops, Nvidia is emphasizing the capabilities of its GPUs. While Microsoft is moving towards offloading AI models to NPUs, Nvidia is positioning its GPUs as more adept at handling heavier AI workloads. By branding its laptops as “RTX AI laptops,” Nvidia is asserting that its GPUs are superior to NPUs in running AI tasks efficiently.
To further solidify its position in the AI battleground, Nvidia is set to launch an RTX AI Toolkit in June. This toolkit will provide developers with tools and SDKs for customizing, optimizing, and deploying AI models. It aims to optimize models to run with minimal VRAM requirements and enhanced performance. Nvidia is also collaborating with Microsoft on integrating AI models into Windows 11, enabling developers to access GPU-accelerated small language models for advanced capabilities.
Microsoft’s Windows Copilot Runtime, introduced at Build last month, aims to simplify the process of adding AI-powered features to applications. Developers can leverage NPUs or Nvidia GPUs for accelerating AI features. While NPUs prioritize power efficiency in laptops, Nvidia GPUs offer significantly higher performance for AI acceleration in PC desktops.
In the evolving landscape of AI in gaming laptops, both Nvidia and AMD are vying for supremacy. While Nvidia is leveraging its GPUs to excel in AI tasks, AMD is gearing up to introduce its own line of AI-powered laptops.
