The highly anticipated Star Wars series, The Acolyte, is set to transport fans to the distant past of the franchise, specifically the final days of the High Republic era. Showrunner Leslye Headland, known for her work on Russian Doll, along with stars Amandla Stenberg from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Lee Jung-jae from Squid Game, recently provided intriguing insights about the show in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The series takes place during a time of relative peace, when the Jedi are at the height of their power. This presented a unique challenge for the creators: how to depict Star Wars without the backdrop of galactic conflict? Headland, grappling with this question, decided to focus on morally complex characters who operate outside the established Jedi order. These characters, as Headland explained, “are using the Force in their own way, dipping into the darker sides of the Force and are doing it without being sanctioned by the larger institution, which, in this case, is the Jedi.”
Despite the absence of large-scale battles, Headland assured fans that action would still have a significant presence in the series. The show will feature thrilling combat scenes, showcasing elaborate martial arts-themed choreography that pushes the boundaries of what viewers expect from Star Wars. Headland confidently stated, “I don’t think you’re going to see action in other shows the way that you see it utilized in our show.”
While the specific details about the characters portrayed by Lee and Stenberg remain shrouded in mystery, both actors expressed their excitement about exploring the moral and ethical dilemmas their roles present. Stenberg, in particular, is thrilled to delve into these conflicts in the Disney+ series. However, they also couldn’t contain their enthusiasm for the more lighthearted aspects of their roles. Lee, through a translator, exclaimed, “I can’t believe I’m playing a Jedi master and I get to use a lightsaber!”
Fans eager to experience The Acolyte’s unique blend of captivating mythology and impressive performances will have to exercise patience. The first season of the series, consisting of eight episodes, is scheduled for release on Disney+ in 2024. In the meantime, viewers can look forward to the premiere of Ahsoka, which will debut with two episodes on August 23, also available on Disney+.
The Acolyte promises to take Star Wars fans on a mesmerizing journey to the final days of the High Republic era. With its exploration of morally complex characters and its groundbreaking action sequences, the series aims to redefine expectations and deliver a fresh and compelling addition to the Star Wars universe. As the release date draws nearer, anticipation continues to build for this highly anticipated series.
