Actor Sylvester Stallone will once again portray Ranger Gabriel Gabe Walker in a sequel to the 1993 action thriller Cliffhanger. The news was first reported by Deadline. The film will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh and produced by Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film, Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions, and Rocket Science. Casting for additional roles is currently underway.
Director Shares Excitement for Sequel
Ric Roman Waugh, who directed Angel Has Fallen and Snitch, expressed his enthusiasm for the project in a statement. “Growing up with the biggest action films of the ’80s and ’90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true,” Waugh said. “It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”
Sequel to Continue Original Storyline
The plot of the sequel has not been disclosed, but the film will continue the story of the original Cliffhanger. The first movie saw Walker attempt to rescue a group of stranded hikers who turned out to be violent criminals searching for a missing $100 million after a plane crash. The film made over $255 million worldwide, was directed by Renny Harlin, and starred Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, and Janine Turner.
Stallone’s Many Upcoming Projects
In addition to the Cliffhanger sequel, Stallone will reprise his role as Ravager Captain Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, set to hit theaters in May. He will also appear in the latest installment of the Expendables franchise, due out in September. Stallone stars in the crime drama series Tulsa King and will appear with his family in the docuseries The Family Stallone on Paramount+.
