The Relay for Reddit app developer has outlined how the app might survive the increased API fees that have left many third-party Reddit apps facing closure. In a post, Dave said there was no possibility of continuing the free version of the app and that a monthly subscription price of $3 or less might be achievable. Dave said there was no financially viable way to continue to offer a free version of Relay, given the apparent $20m annual cost of maintaining Apollo for Reddit under the new policy. Dave added that the timeline to make changes was “alarmingly tight” with Reddit’s new API pricing taking effect from 1 July.

Relay for Reddit would be ad-free and would not have recommended content. It would also not include sexually-explicit content, which will be limited for all apps using Reddit’s Data API. Dave said that the entire model was subject to how many and what type of users choose to stay with Relay as a subscription-based app. He added that the app would be switched fully to a monthly subscription model with no free version available.

The changes come after Reddit announced prohibitively expensive API pricing that has led to the closure of many third-party Reddit apps. The new pricing, which goes into effect on 1 July, has led many app developers to shut down their services.

Relay for Reddit is one of the few third-party Reddit apps that may survive the changes. The app developer has reduced the number of API calls per user per day. At the new level of calls, there’s potential to offer a subscription to the app at a $2 or $3 per month.

The move to a monthly subscription model is seen as a potential path forward for third-party Reddit app developers. However, it remains to be seen how many users will be willing to pay for access to these apps, given that the Reddit website and its official app are free to use.
