On Christmas day, the popular Slay The Spire mod, Downfall, experienced a concerning “security breach”. Hackers took advantage of this breach to distribute malware through Steam, posing a significant threat to users. The developers of the mod have shed light on the incident and warn users of the potential risks they may face.

The malware employed by the hackers aims to steal sensitive information, primarily users’ passwords stored in their internet browsers. Moreover, passwords for messaging services such as Telegram and Discord were also targeted. Upon launching Downfall during the hijack, affected users would have encountered a “Unity library installer popup”. This sophisticated attack opens the door for potential identity theft and compromise of personal accounts.

The developers swiftly responded to the breach and successfully reversed the hack by approximately 1:40pm ET (6:40pm GMT) on December 25th. Their prompt actions saved many users from further harm. However, it is important to note that most antivirus software did not prevent the malware from executing. Instead, they intercepted the transmission of the malicious payload over the internet. While this provides some level of protection, it does not completely nullify the danger posed by the attack.

Users affected by the breach reported the discovery of files created by the malware in various locations on their hard drives. The developers caution users to exercise caution when investigating these suspicious files. To mitigate the risks, it is advisable to disconnect from the internet before engaging in any analysis of these files. This reduces the likelihood of any further compromise to personal information.

Considering the severity of the breach, it is essential for affected users to promptly change their passwords, especially for accounts where two-factor authentication (2FA) is not enabled. By updating these passwords, users can add an extra layer of security to their accounts, decreasing the chances of unauthorized access.

Downfall, known for its significant contributions to Slay The Spire, enchants players with new playable characters, an enhanced game mode, and more. Despite this setback, the developers remain committed to the community and have already begun working on a new project called Tales & Tactics. This standalone auto-battling Chess roguelike aims to provide an exciting and engaging experience for fans.

The security breach in Slay The Spire mod Downfall serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities present in the gaming industry. Users must remain vigilant against potential threats and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information. By staying informed and implementing recommended security practices, individuals can ensure their online safety and continue to enjoy the gaming community without compromise.
