After 17 years of service, Ryo Nagamatsu, a long-time composer at Nintendo, has left the company to explore new opportunities. Nagamatsu, who is best known for his works on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3, and the Link’s Awakening remake on Switch, announced his departure on Twitter earlier today.

In his tweet, Nagamatsu expressed his desire to “work a little wider,” stating that he wants to assist those who need his help and the industry as a whole. Despite his departure, Nagamatsu has parted ways with the company on good terms.

Nagamatsu joined Nintendo in 2006 and has been credited with several well-known works, including the ‘Melty Monster Galaxy’ theme in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and various C-Side compositions in Splatoon 3. If you’ve attempted the expert staff ghost trials in Mario Kart Wii, you may have faced off against Nagamatsu’s Mii in Wario’s Gold Mine and GCN Waluigi Stadium.

Although Nagamatsu has left the company, it is highly probable that he will continue to make significant contributions to the industry. His talent and experience will undoubtedly make him an asset to any team he joins. Until then, fans of Nagamatsu’s music can only express their gratitude for the years of incredible music he has provided and wish him all the success and luck in the world!
