During a financial earnings call, Warner Bros. Games revealed that Mortal Kombat 12 would be released in 2023 with “ambitious launch projections”. The announcement came as a surprise as the gaming industry is known for keeping projects secret until closer to release. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon did not provide any details about the game.

30th Anniversary Celebrated with Teaser

In a video celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat series, developer NetherRealm Studios acknowledged Mortal Kombat 12. The video features several members of the studio thanking fans for their support and concludes with Ed Boon commenting that “we’re not quite done yet”. The video then shows a CG scene of sand falling in an hourglass, with the camera focusing on a single grain of sand that explodes.

Potential for New Beginnings in Mortal Kombat Lore

The imagery in the teaser video is significant for those familiar with the dense narrative of Mortal Kombat 11. The game’s primary antagonist, Kronika, had the ability to manipulate time, leading to characters being thrown back in time. By the end of the game, series protagonist Liu Kang rebooted the universe, marking a brand-new beginning for the Mortal Kombat lore. This provides a strong jumping-off point for Mortal Kombat 12 to potentially rethink the series as it celebrates its 30-year anniversary. Fans can expect to hear more from NetherRealm Studios soon.
