The Ultimate Ninja Storm games have been a staple of 3D arena fighting for years, but it has been seven years since the last proper release. The torch has been passed from Naruto to Boruto, and Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is the new entry into the series that picks up where the previous game left off. This game is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Naruto anime and features an expansive roster of over 130 characters throughout Naruto’s history.

Gameplay

Mechanically, Naruto X Boruto plays similarly to previous games in the series. Two players face off in a 3D arena using basic attacks, combos, substitute dodges, and a variety of wild Jutsus. The game is also a tag-fighter, with each player having a team of three characters who they can swap to during the fight. Players can mix and match their favorite characters for different team compositions while setting themselves up for Combination Ultimate Jutsus. With a roster of characters from Boruto, players can execute a whole new variety of these Combination Ultimate Jutsus. Naruto X Boruto also features a simplified control scheme to make the game more welcoming to newcomers.

Story Modes

Boruto X Naruto features two story modes. The History Mode captures the key moments in the original run of Naruto, while the Special Story Mode puts Boruto front-and-center, taking players through the pivotal battles seen in the Boruto anime and highlighting the events so far. The Special Story Mode is designed to let players become “aware of Boruto and then maybe get interested in watching the anime or reading the manga.”

Development Goals

The goal of Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is to usher in a new generation of fans while appealing to old fans of the series. The Special Story Mode is designed to introduce new players to the Boruto story and encourage them to watch the anime or read the manga. The simplified control scheme is designed to make the game more welcoming to newcomers. The game aims to reach a broader audience, which was one of the bigger development goals of the producer Masaya Yoshizawa.

Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is a fusion of old and new, featuring an expansive roster of characters from both Naruto and Boruto storylines. The game captures the energy and excitement of the previous games in the series while appealing to a new generation of fans. The simplified controls make the game more accessible to newcomers, and the Special Story Mode is designed to introduce players to the Boruto story. Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is set to launch later this year for PlayStation platforms, Xbox consoles, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
