Microsoft’s Edge browser has long been criticized for its slow performance and bloated user interface. However, the company is now taking steps to address these issues by introducing the WebUI 2.0 architecture migration. This update aims to make Edge’s user interface more responsive, starting with its Browser Essentials menu.
One of the most notable improvements brought by the WebUI 2.0 architecture migration is the significant speed boost in loading times. The Browser Essentials menu, which displays information about Edge’s performance, now loads 42 percent faster than before. Microsoft has compared the loading times of the menu on WebUI 2.0 with React and WebUI with Javascript, showing a clear improvement in performance.
In addition to the Browser Essentials menu, Microsoft is also working on speeding up other features within Edge. The favorites menu, for example, has received a 40 percent speed boost in build 124. Furthermore, Edge’s history, downloads, and wallet features are set to receive the WebUI 2.0 upgrade in the near future. This upgrade aims to optimize Edge’s performance by reducing the size of code bundles and implementing a more modular architecture.
Microsoft developed WebUI 2.0 after identifying that many of Edge’s components were utilizing large bundles of code, which were negatively impacting the browser’s performance.
