It’s funny how life works sometimes. Just when you think you’ve moved on from a certain chapter in your life, it has a way of coming back to you. This is exactly what happened to Jennifer Garner, who is set to reprise her role as Marvel’s Elektra in the highly anticipated film, Deadpool 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Garner, who portrayed Elektra Natchios in the 2003 Daredevil film and its 2005 spin-off, Elektra, will once again don the character’s iconic suit.

Deadpool 3 seems to be a magnet for actors who have retired from the superhero genre. After years of playful banter on social media, Ryan Reynolds announced the upcoming film, with a surprise appearance from Hugh Jackman, who confirmed his return as Wolverine. The Hollywood Reporter’s report also aligns with recent rumors that Ben Affleck might make a comeback as Daredevil, as well as speculation surrounding the return of James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Halle Berry as Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, respectively. While these rumors remain unconfirmed, Jennifer Garner’s involvement adds credibility to the idea of a multiverse within Deadpool 3.

As The Hollywood Reporter suggests, Garner’s return suggests that Deadpool 3 will explore the concept of a multiverse. This idea fits seamlessly within the Deadpool universe, considering Ryan Reynolds previously portrayed a version of the character alongside Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Furthermore, the first Deadpool film was released amidst the reboot of the X-Men franchise, with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender taking on the roles of Charles Xavier and Magneto. It’s evident that Deadpool, also known as the fourth-wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth, is a one-man multiverse in himself.

Given the history of these returning actors, it’s safe to assume that they will have a field day poking fun at their past superhero roles. Jennifer Garner, in particular, made history as one of the first women to lead a superhero movie with Elektra. However, the film didn’t fare well with both audiences and critics, earning a dismal 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This humorous self-awareness is reminiscent of the recent Flash film, which concluded with a tongue-in-cheek cameo from a former DC Comics actor.

The highly anticipated Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously collaborated with Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project. Alongside Garner and Reynolds, the film will also see the return of Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead (now Negasonic Adult Warhead?), Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Rob Delaney as Peter, the sole survivor of Deadpool’s X-Force. Fans can mark their calendars as Deadpool 3 is slated for release on May 4, 2024.
