Graphics cards are a crucial component in any gaming PC setup, providing the necessary power to render high-quality graphics and deliver a seamless gaming experience. With the advancement of technology, modern graphics cards are becoming more powerful, but this also means that they generate a significant amount of heat. In order to maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating, a proper cooling system is essential. However, recent findings have revealed a concerning issue with the thermal paste used in many Nvidia RTX 40-series graphics cards.

The Problem with Thermal Paste

It has come to light that several Nvidia RTX 40-series vendors are cutting corners when it comes to the quality of thermal paste used in their graphics cards. This sub-standard thermal paste, combined with poor application techniques, has resulted in excessively high hotspot temperatures and performance degradation over time. A renowned hardware tester, Igor’s Lab, conducted tests on multiple GeForce RTX cards and found that the factory-applied thermal paste was not up to par for the job.

Having four RTX 40-series cards in my possession, I decided to investigate the issue further. Upon disassembling one of the cards, I discovered a similar situation to that observed by Igor’s Lab. The factory-applied thermal paste had deteriorated within a few months, leaving behind an oily film and patches of the compound itself. This degraded thermal paste resulted in higher hotspot temperatures, affecting the overall performance of the graphics card.

Effects of Poor Thermal Paste Application

Cheap and improperly applied thermal paste not only leads to higher hotspot temperatures but also causes the graphics card’s performance to decline over time. As GPUs throttle clock speeds to prevent overheating, users may experience reduced performance in their gaming sessions. While enthusiasts may be accustomed to replacing CPU thermal paste regularly, it is a more complex process when dealing with graphics cards.

In an attempt to address the thermal paste issue, Igor’s Lab applied a higher-quality thermal paste to an RTX 4080 graphics card, resulting in a significant decrease in hotspot temperatures. This simple intervention improved the card’s overall performance and demonstrated the importance of using the right thermal paste. While changing the thermal paste on my RTX 4080 Super did not resolve the hotspot delta issue, it did lead to a slight reduction in die temperature.

As consumers invest a substantial amount of money in high-end graphics cards, it is reasonable to expect that manufacturers prioritize quality components, including thermal paste. By using premium thermal paste and applying it correctly, vendors can ensure that their graphics cards maintain optimal performance and longevity. It is essential for graphics card manufacturers to address the issue of sub-standard thermal paste to provide users with a seamless gaming experience without the worry of overheating or performance degradation.
