Intel’s upcoming Meteor Lake processors will come with a solid base tile known as Adamantine, which will feature a large L4 cache. This cache will potentially improve the performance of the integrated graphics chip and boot times.

The Patent and L4 Cache

A patent filed by Intel a couple of years back has recently been brought to ComputerBase’s attention. The patent details the Adamantine base tile, which is part of Intel’s first true chiplet CPU, Meteor Lake. The patent reveals that the L4 cache, with access time potentially “much less than the DRAM access time” of system memory, will improve boot times, in addition to improving the speeds of the built-in Xe graphics cores.

Initially, it was thought that the extra L4 was purely an Infinity Cache analog or an eDRAM cache clone. However, the patent reveals that it goes further than that. The Linux patch notes described how the iGPU would no longer have access to the compute tile’s L3 cache. The L4 cache will provide an easily accessible memory cache, which could make a system boot much quicker out of sleep or hibernation modes.

The Adamantine base tile will feature in Intel’s upcoming Meteor Lake processors. The L4 cache will not only accelerate the built-in Xe graphics cores but also improve boot times.
