After creating Metal Gear Solid, founding his own studio, and becoming friends with most of Hollywood, Hideo Kojima’s next big ambition is apparently to be blasted into space to make a game. According to Kojima, he would love to create a game that can be played in space while he is in space. He made this statement at the Tribeca Film Festival, where he spoke about his creative process and his desire to go to space.

Experimental Game Developer

Although it is difficult to tell how much of Kojima’s statement was a joke, he is known for being an experimental game developer. In the past, he designed a sunlight-powered Game Boy Advance roleplaying game called Boktai, which included a working solar panel used to charge the player’s vampire-hunting guns in-game. He has also spoken for many years about his desire to create a game that literally self-destructs on a Game Over.

Kojima is famous for the auteur-ish quirks of his best-known series, which included the controller-switching and memory card-reading of the Psycho Mantis fight in Metal Gear Solid 1, the bait-and-switch of Metal Gear Solid 2’s marketing, Death Stranding’s parade of celebrity cameos, and the real-time battle against The End in Metal Gear Solid 3, which could be completed by waiting two weeks for the veteran sniper to pass away from old age.

Challenges of Gaming in Space

While it may seem like a far-fetched idea to create a game that can be played in space, Kojima is aware of the challenges. Currently, all games cannot be properly played in outer space. However, Kojima wants to change that and create something that he would play. He is hoping someone will send him up to space so he can accomplish his goal.

Kojima’s Future Plans

Kojima is always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in gaming. He is currently working on Death Stranding 2 and other projects at Kojima Productions. Although it is uncertain whether his desire to create a game playable in space will come to fruition, it is clear that Kojima has many ideas and is always looking for new challenges. Whether he goes to space or not, there is a good chance he will take Norman Reedus with him.
