Recent reports from Android Authority suggest that Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 lineup will come with a new and improved ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. This technology is said to be faster and more reliable than the previous optical under-display fingerprint sensor featured on the Pixel 6. The new scanner is capable of reading even wet or oily fingerprints, addressing some of the common issues users have faced with the current technology.

Optical fingerprint scanners, which have been around for a while, work by shining light on the user’s finger and visually detecting patterns and ridges on the surface. However, these scanners can be affected by external factors such as dirt or blemishes, leading to reliability issues. On the other hand, ultrasonic sensors use ultrasonic pulses to read fingerprints with greater accuracy. This technology is not only more reliable but also eliminates the need for bright lights when unlocking the phone in low-light conditions.

According to leaks from Kamila Wojciechowska, the Pixel 9 will be equipped with Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) fingerprint scanner, the same model found on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This indicates that Google is looking to incorporate the latest technology in its upcoming devices for a better user experience. The new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is expected to be available on all Pixel 9 models, except for the Fold 2, which will retain its current power button-based fingerprint sensor.

As the Pixel 9 hardware event is scheduled for August 13th, we can expect to learn more about the new features and improvements that Google has in store for its latest lineup. With the introduction of the faster and more reliable ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, users can look forward to a smoother and more secure unlocking experience on their Pixel devices. Stay tuned for more updates on Google’s Pixel 9 lineup and what it has to offer in terms of innovative technology and user-friendly features.
