The Olympic Esport Series 2023 has included Fortnite in its line-up, scheduled to take place in Singapore next month. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had earlier announced a range of games for the Esports Series, including regular Olympic-style events. The Esports Series includes virtual sports, representing the typical esports titles, such as Chess.com for chess, Zwift for cycling, and Just Dance for dancing. However, Fortnite is joining the new “sport shooting” section, which is something of an outlier since it doesn’t qualify as a shooty sim.

The IOC has not aimed to change Fortnite’s usual building-based fun. Instead, it has introduced a specially designed Fortnite Creative Island reflecting sport shooting competitions. The island will put the target-aiming accuracy of sharp shooters to the test and see them navigate the in-game environment as they compete.

The Fortnite Creative Island may not be as flashy as the mechanical boss fights created in Fortnite’s updated creative mode, nor does it sound especially interesting to watch. However, Fortnite has now become an Olympic sport, which is sure to delight kids and adult players worldwide. In the 2023 Olympic Esports Series, 12 pro players from this year’s Fortnite Champion Series will go head-to-head in the specially designed Fortnite Creative Island.

Playing Fortnite can now potentially lead to the Olympics, allowing teachers to no longer scold kids for sneaking in a game during class. Fortnite has joined the Olympic Esport Series 2023, implying that playing the game can help win gold medals. The full Olympic Esports Series will run from June 22nd-25th, with the Fortnite event taking place on Saturday, June 24th.
