Elon Musk’s highly anticipated interview with former President Donald Trump on X Spaces started off on the wrong foot. The interview was scheduled to begin at 8PM ET, but it crashed immediately, leaving eager viewers waiting for 42 minutes before it finally kicked off. However, those who were able to access the Space reported that they were greeted with lo-fi techno music playing from Trump’s account for a lengthy 30 minutes before any conversation took place.
Blame Game
After the delayed start, Musk claimed that X was under a “massive DDOS attack,” preventing the interview from proceeding as planned. Despite this claim, the rest of X appeared to be functioning normally and sources within the company confirmed that there was no actual denial-of-service attack. In fact, one X staffer even went as far as to suggest that there was a “99 percent” chance that Musk was lying about the alleged attack.
In a series of follow-up posts on X, Musk boasted about testing the system with 8 million concurrent listeners on the same day as the interview. When the interview eventually began at 8:40PM ET, Musk reiterated the DDOS attack claim, stating that it was proof of the opposition towards allowing people to hear what President Trump has to say. However, many viewers were left skeptical of Musk’s claims, especially after the repeated technical issues plaguing the event.
This fiasco of an interview bore similarities to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s attempt to announce his 2023 presidential candidacy on X, which also suffered from technical difficulties. Musk had attributed those problems to overloaded servers at the time, leaving many to wonder if the issues with the Trump interview were of a similar nature.
Elon Musk’s interview with former President Donald Trump was marred by technical difficulties, questionable claims, and a general sense of chaos. Despite the anticipation surrounding the event, many viewers were left disappointed and frustrated by the execution. It remains to be seen whether future interviews on X Spaces will be able to avoid similar pitfalls and provide a smoother, more reliable experience for both hosts and viewers alike.
