Damon Lindelof, the creator of HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Watchmen,’ was one of the writers behind the screenplay for the upcoming Star Wars film. But he’s not anymore. In a recent video interview with Esquire, Lindelof joked that he was asked to leave the Star Wars universe. However, he was clear that he didn’t hold any grudges about it. In fact, he stated that he would be happy to have another chance at working on a Star Wars project in the future.

The film in question is set to focus on Rey’s Jedi academy after the events of the latest trilogy. The movie, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, was announced earlier this month at the Star Wars Celebration. The screenplay was written by Steven Knight, who is the creator of popular TV series such as ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘Taboo,’ as well as the writer and director of the Tom Hardy film ‘Locke.’

Lindelof’s Thoughts

Despite being fired from the project, Lindelof stated that he had a deep love for the Star Wars universe. “This movie was the alpha and the omega,” he said, referring to the original Star Wars film. “It was the first movie I saw in a movie theater. I love all the storytelling in that world. And if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. Or again again try, as Yoda would say.”

Last week, Lindelof told Variety that his scrapped screenplay, which he wrote with Justin Britt-Gibson, was a “labor of love.” He wished the team all the best of luck and praised Obaid-Chinoy as being an incredible director. He is excited to see what Obaid-Chinoy comes up with for the movie.

It is clear that Lindelof is a fan of the Star Wars universe and holds no ill will towards the team behind the new movie. Despite being asked to leave, he remains enthusiastic about the possibility of working on a future Star Wars project.
