Embark Studios, the developer of the free-to-play shooter game The Finals, recently implemented a significant ban wave to address the issue of rampant cheating in the game. While the game received positive feedback for its destructible levels and tactical gameplay, the presence of cheaters tarnished its reputation. In an attempt to address this concern, Embark Studios carried out an overnight ban wave. However, it seems that some innocent players, including Twitch streamers, were also affected by this action.

The ban wave implemented by Embark Studios had unintended consequences. A prominent journalist, Tom Warren, shared on his social media that the bans seemed to have affected not only cheaters but also players who were not involved in any misconduct. This observation was corroborated by a Twitch streamer known as PRX Jinggg, who received a ban notification despite not engaging in any cheating activities. Such incidents were widespread and prompted several players to express their frustration on Twitter.

One user, named Viscose, even shared a gameplay clip to demonstrate their innocence. The clip showed top-down footage of their mouse movements, serving as evidence that no cheating took place. Interestingly, Viscose’s ban was eventually lifted after a few hours, indicating that some bans were issued without proper reason or justification. While it is commendable that Embark Studios quickly rectified these false bans, it raises questions about the accuracy and reliability of their ban mechanism.

The sudden and often unjustified bans have had a negative impact on the player community. Many innocent players were unable to access the game and enjoy their gameplay experience. This situation has caused frustration, confusion, and disappointment among players who were wrongly flagged by the ban wave. Embark Studios needs to address this issue promptly to regain the trust and confidence of its player base.

Despite the ban wave controversy, The Finals had an otherwise successful launch month. Within just 15 days of its release, the game amassed an impressive player base of 10 million users. The game’s popularity can be attributed to its unique features and engaging gameplay. Additionally, players have been showcasing their creativity by experimenting with different builds, including one player who ingeniously created a cheater-killing machine by placing a turret inside a plant pot.

The ban wave carried out by Embark Studios on The Finals was intended to address the issue of cheating in the game. While the studio’s proactive approach is commendable, the implementation of the ban wave resulted in unintended consequences. Innocent players, including Twitch streamers and regular gamers, were wrongfully banned. This has negatively impacted the player community and raised doubts about the efficacy of the ban mechanism. It is crucial for Embark Studios to rectify these issues promptly and regain players’ trust to ensure the continued success of The Finals.
