After a three-year hiatus, Computex is back in person, gathering the biggest names in the laptop and PC space in Taipei this week. The event will showcase products scheduled to be released this summer and throughout the rest of 2023. This year’s event features a clear focus on software services and artificial intelligence, which were major themes at CES earlier this year.
For those who cannot attend the event, there is no need to worry as we’ll be on the ground in Taipei all week, catching keynotes, interviewing the big players, and getting our hands on some of the most exciting gadgets that will be released in 2023.
Nvidia, one of the most anticipated events of the week, announced its DGX GH200 at Computex. The 144TB Nvidia GPU has 256 of its new “Grace Hopper superchips” for an exaflop of AI performance. It contains 150 miles of optical fiber and over 2,000 fans. Google, Meta, and Microsoft will be “evaluating” it, although they tend to build their own compute clouds, even if they contain loads of Nvidia GPUs.
According to Nvidia, its DGX GH200 is 2.2 times faster than the previous-generation DGX H100 cluster at GPT3 training.
Arm Cortex Immortalis 2023, a CPU and GPU core designer for licensees, announced its new designs at Computex. These designs include Cortex-X4 (big CPU) with 15% more performance and 40% less power, Cortex-A720 and A520 with 20% and 22% more efficiency, respectively, and Immortalis-G720 (the GPU) with 15% more performance and 40% lighter on memory bandwidth.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang gave a glimpse of what it might be like when gaming and AI collide at Computex 2023. He showcased a graphically breathtaking rendering of a cyberpunk ramen shop where you can actually talk to the proprietor. Instead of clicking on dialogue options, the game imagines you could hold down a button, say something with your own voice, and get an answer from a video game character. Nvidia calls it a “peek at the future of games.”
Acer kicked off the announcement roll at Computex 2023 with the launch of a refreshed Swift Edge 16, a high-end, AMD-powered, ultralight OLED workstation, and Predator Triton 16, a QHD AAA gaming rig. Acer also has expanded tools for SpatialLabs, its glasses-free 3D technology, in the works. Whether these will be enough to make people actually want glasses-free 3D laptops remains to be seen.
Computex 2023 is one of the biggest trade shows of the year for the laptop and PC space. The event begins in a couple of days, and we can expect to see a whole bunch of refreshes to popular laptop lines, updated desktop components, and maybe even a CPU or two.
