It’s a common practice for video game companies to remove older titles from circulation when a remaster or remake is released. Even Sega is following this trend by planning to delist the original Sonic Generations before the remaster, Sonic x Shadow Generations, hits the market on October 25th. However, this doesn’t mean that the original Sonic Generations will be completely unavailable to fans.
Sega announced via the official Sonic the Hedgehog account that the original Sonic Generations will be delisted as a standalone title on September 9th. Despite this, the game will still be accessible through bundles on platforms like Steam and Xbox. Existing owners of Sonic Generations will also still be able to download and play the game. This move is aimed at preserving the game in its original form while making it available to those who still want to experience it.
For old school gamers who prefer physical copies, Sonic Generations for Xbox 360 is still an option. The game is backwards compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, and new copies are currently available on Amazon for just $23. This provides fans with a chance to own a copy of the game before it becomes harder to find in the market.
Alongside the remaster of Sonic Generations, Sega is introducing a new title, Shadow Generations, in Sonic x Shadow Generations. The two games will take place concurrently with each other, giving players a new gaming experience within the Sonic universe. Sonic x Shadow Generations is set to be released on various platforms including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 25th.
While changes are coming to the availability of Sonic Generations, both the original game and the upcoming remaster offer fans the opportunity to enjoy the iconic Sonic gameplay in different ways.
