Writer-director James Cameron, known for his ambitious projects, has revealed that he has plans for not just five, but a total of seven Avatar films. While Avatar 6 and 7 are still possibilities, Cameron has expressed his likelihood of stepping down as director for those installments. In an interview with Collider, Cameron mentioned, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point.”
Cameron acknowledges that creating the Avatar movies is an all-consuming process, and there are other projects he desires to pursue. The director expressed interest in passing the baton to another trusted director who can carry the franchise forward. However, Cameron has yet to make any final decisions about his involvement beyond Avatar 5. He remains open to the possibility of continuing to helm the franchise if circumstances align with his interests.
A Timeline for the Future
Currently, post-production work is underway for Avatar 3, which is slated for release in December 2025. Following this, the franchise will proceed with Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, as per the present plan. While details of the plot for Avatar 3 have been kept under wraps, it has been revealed that the film will introduce a malevolent faction among the Na’vi, deviating from the focus on the virtuous Na’vi tribes seen in previous films. The upcoming installment will feature both returning cast members and new additions, such as Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin, and David Thewlis.
James Cameron has an exceptional track record when it comes to box office success. Avatar, released in 2009, remains the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, generating a staggering $2.92 billion. Avatar’s sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, holds the third spot with $2.3 billion. Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster, Titanic, ranks fourth with $2.26 billion. This means that the director is responsible for three out of the top four highest-grossing films in history. The other two movies in the top five are Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion), both under the Disney umbrella.
