Amazon has recently introduced a new feature on its Luna cloud gaming service that allows users to purchase games. However, there is a catch – currently, you can only buy select Ubisoft titles. This limitation may affect the overall appeal of the feature, as users may prefer a wider range of games to choose from.

Previously, Amazon’s Luna service only allowed users to play games by subscribing to specific channels of content or accessing a rotating set of games available to Amazon Prime subscribers. Additionally, users could play Ubisoft games they already owned for PC through the Luna cloud gaming service. The ability to purchase games directly on Luna expands the options available to users, but the restriction to only select Ubisoft titles may disappoint some users who were expecting a broader catalog.

To stream the purchased Ubisoft games on Luna, users will need to have either an Amazon Prime or a Luna Plus subscription. This requirement limits the accessibility of the purchased games to only those who subscribe to either of these services. Users who do not have a subscription may feel excluded or discouraged from utilizing the new feature.

Amazon has stated that users will be able to play the Ubisoft games they purchase through Luna offline on their PCs. This offline play feature adds convenience and flexibility for users who may not always have a stable internet connection. Additionally, Amazon’s announcement hints at the possibility of playing the purchased Ubisoft games on other cloud gaming services. This cross-platform compatibility could be a significant advantage for users who prefer to switch between different cloud gaming services.

After the initial publication of this article, Ubisoft’s Jessica Roache confirmed that games purchased on Luna will be playable on other cloud gaming services like Nvidia’s GeForce Now, although not all games may support cross-progression. This acknowledgment offers users further flexibility in choosing the cloud gaming service that suits their preferences and requirements.

Google’s now-shuttered cloud gaming service, Stadia, also offered users the ability to buy games. However, in contrast to Amazon’s Luna, Stadia did not have a restriction on the publishers or developers of the games available for purchase. This difference could significantly impact users’ decision-making process when choosing between the two cloud gaming services.

Amazon’s introduction of the ability to buy games on Luna is a notable addition to its cloud gaming service. However, the restriction to select Ubisoft titles may hinder its appeal to some users who were hoping for a broader selection of games. Additionally, the requirement of an Amazon Prime or Luna Plus subscription to stream the purchased games may limit accessibility. Nevertheless, the promise of offline play and cross-platform compatibility with other cloud gaming services provides some advantages to Luna users. As the cloud gaming industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Luna and other similar services adapt to meet the expectations and demands of users.
