The Marvel movie Madame Web is unlike any other film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It deviates from the usual big-budget production, opting for a lower budget and filmed mostly on location. Furthermore, the film introduces a unique twist by featuring a Spider-Man lookalike as the antagonist. While it includes Marvel Easter eggs, the movie actively tries to conceal them rather than making them obvious. However, the most surprising aspect of Madame Web is its focus on a Marvel Comics superhero team that lacks an established name. In the world of comics, Madame Web has a reputation for mentoring various Spider-related characters, especially groups of Spider-Women. In this movie adaptation, Celeste O’Connor, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabela Merced take on the roles of Mattie Franklin, Julia Cornwall, and Aña Corazón, respectively. The lack of an official team name prompted fans to wonder what they should call themselves.

During an interview at the Madame Web junket, the actresses revealed that they had their own group name. According to Sydney Sweeney, they referred to themselves as “the Boo Crew.” She explained that the name originated when she got matching sweaters for the team. However, Isabela Merced corrected her by disclosing that it was actually Mattie Franklin’s girlfriend who provided the matching sweaters. Regardless, the trio couldn’t contain their excitement about the Boo Crew sweaters, going so far as to reminisce about their Halloween-themed pajama party. The name “Boo Crew” carries various interpretations, some of which may not be ideal for a superhero team. Sydney Sweeney playfully commented that people might start booing when the group enters the scene to fight crime. Although the Boo Crew was a fun choice, it seems unlikely that Sony and Marvel would approve the name for official use.

While “Boo Crew” remained their unofficial moniker, the actresses hadn’t considered pitching it or any other ideas to Sony or Marvel. Aware of the need for a more marketable team name, they brainstormed potential candidates. Sydney Sweeney proposed “Spidey Sisters,” which received positive responses from her co-stars. Isabela Merced suggested a name reminiscent of iconic girl groups like the Cheetah Girls, Destiny’s Child, or Spice Girls. Dakota Johnson, who plays the title character, expressed curiosity about the team’s name during a separate interview. Although she didn’t have any suggestions of her own, she inquired about the discussion between O’Connor, Merced, and Sweeney. The revelation of the Boo Crew group text surprised her, as she humorously mentioned that she wasn’t part of the chat.

Madame Web, the latest addition to Sony’s Marvel movies outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now showing in theaters. The film’s exploration of a nameless superhero team raises intriguing questions about identity and branding. The journey to find a suitable team name highlights the characters’ unique bond and their desire to be recognized as a united force. While the Boo Crew has a lighthearted charm, it might not convey the necessary seriousness and appeal to Sony and Marvel executives. With possible options like “Spidey Sisters” and other catchy variations, the team is on a quest to define their identity beyond the screen. As audiences immerse themselves in the world of Madame Web, they eagerly await the moment when a definitive team name will be unveiled, forever solidifying the legacy of these extraordinary Spider-Women.
