Asus has announced that its new handheld gaming device, the ROG Ally, will be launched on May 11. The company has been sharing information about the device, which it claims will “redefine handheld gaming,” including the 120Hz 7-inch screen’s response time and the machine’s pair of AMD Ryzen Z1-series chips.
Features and Specs
The ROG Ally will be powered by a semi-custom, 6-core, 12-thread SoC known as the Ryzen Z1, which is a cut down version of AMD’s recent Ryzen 7 7840U mobile APU. The device will also feature an RDNA 3 GPU and 16GB LPDDR5 memory. There will be two versions of the device, one with the standard Z1 chip and one with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, which features eight cores and 16 threads and three times the number of RDNA 3 compute units than the standard Z1 chip. The device will also have a 7-inch 1080p screen running at 120Hz with a 7ms response time, AMD FreeSync compatibility, and a 500 nits peak brightness. Other features include HDMI 2.0 compatibility, a swappable SSD, and a fingerprint sensor on the wake button for a quick login.
Pricing and Availability
Asus has not yet revealed the price of the device, but has confirmed that it will be below $1,000. The company is also offering three months of Game Pass Ultimate with each purchase. The ROG Ally will be launched on May 11, and will compete with the Steam Deck, which has a similar form factor and is priced at $399.
Asus is hoping to challenge the Steam Deck with the ROG Ally, which promises to redefine handheld gaming. The device features a powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 chip and a 7-inch 120Hz screen, and comes in at a price point that is comparable to the mid-tier Steam Deck. While the device’s Windows 11 operating system may pose some challenges, Asus is confident that its game launcher and unified UI will make gaming on the device a seamless experience.
