Bluesky, a decentralized social network similar to Twitter, has decided to temporarily halt new signups in an effort to resolve performance problems that have arisen since Twitter implemented limits on the number of tweets users can view in a day. Although an invite code is still required to join Bluesky, the influx of new users has caused difficulties for the platform.
Bluesky addressed the issue in a post, stating, “We will temporarily be pausing Bluesky sign-ups while our team continues to resolve the existing performance issues. We’ll keep you updated when invite codes will resume functionality. We’re excited to welcome more users to our beta soon!” Currently, Bluesky’s status page reports “degraded performance,” with the first notice of issues appearing at 1:47PM ET. While posts on the web still load, they often take an extended period of time. However, the iOS app seems to be functioning more smoothly.
At 2:03PM ET, Bluesky acknowledged that it is facing “record-high traffic.” The platform is also working on mobile app updates in an attempt to address the problems. Bluesky engineer Paul Frazee confirmed this in a statement.
Twitter’s Troubles and Mastodon’s Rise
The troubles for Twitter began on Friday when the platform began blocking unregistered users. Owner Elon Musk stated that this was a “temporary emergency measure” due to excessive data harvesting that was negatively impacting regular users. On Saturday, Musk introduced new limits on the number of tweets users can view in a day.
Interestingly, Mastodon, another social networking platform, has also experienced a significant increase in users. According to a tracker, the platform has gained over 26,000 new accounts within the past day.
Resolving Performance Issues and Welcoming New Users
Bluesky’s decision to pause new signups temporarily demonstrates their commitment to resolving the performance issues that have arisen as a result of Twitter’s recent changes. By addressing these challenges, Bluesky aims to provide a smoother and more efficient user experience.
