Welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl where we will be looking at the box art designs of the Puyo Pop Fever game. Puyo Pop Fever, developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, is a popular game that was launched in 2003. It is a part of the Puyo Puyo franchise, which is still going strong today with the latest entry, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, launched on Switch in 2020.
Last time, we looked at Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, and the Western design for North America and Europe won with 72% of the vote. This time, we have a three-way battle to determine the winner, so let’s get started.
The Box Art Designs
The North American release of Puyo Pop Fever doesn’t feature the protagonist Amitie on the cover. Instead, it displays a bunch of slimy Puyos on the front cover. Although it’s a good indication of the gameplay, the design isn’t exciting and bold.
The European design is more appealing, where Amitie is front and center, surrounded by adorable Puyos. The red background of the North American design is retained, but it’s a lot brighter with pink spots dotted around to provide some variety. This design is more eye-catching and is a favorite among many.
The Japanese design is similar to the European design, featuring the same image of Amitie along with the surrounding Puyos. However, the background is made up of more of the game’s core characters, making the overall image pop. Additionally, the logo itself is written in Japanese, which looks awesome.
Despite the different designs, the gameplay remains the same in all regions.
The Verdict
This week’s Box Art Brawl is a close call between Europe and Japan. The North American design, with only 18% of the vote, is the clear loser. The European design is colorful and vibrant, but the Japanese design is unique and appealing. In the end, it’s a matter of personal preference, but we give a slight edge to Japan for its unique design and use of the Japanese language in the logo.
The box art design of Puyo Pop Fever is a great representation of the game, but the Japanese design stands out for its uniqueness and appeal. Which design do you prefer? Cast your vote in the poll below.
