Voidigo is a top-down roguelike shooter that was recently released from early access. The game is well deserving of its overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam due to its lively nature and energetic gameplay. Players can splat crustaceans and wasps with skeleton trombones and deadly finger guns, making every moment of the game an adventure.
The game is structured in a series of levels with boss fights, where players collect weapons and layers of bonus effects. The last run is defined by a broomstick melee weapon that sends players hurtling around the screen, along with lasers that fire every time they dodge. With three upgrades, players get three lasers, a bunch of money, and a power-up that flings a plague of frogs at anyone they stomp on.
While the game is generous, it is also deadly. Enemies will shred players in seconds if they drop their guard, no matter how many lasers or frogs they have accrued. Boss fights are damageable but not killable until players stomp on all the void beacons scattered across each level, which keeps them on their toes and means they get a pleasing rhythm as they transition from huntee to hunter.
The stomp mentioned earlier is crucial because it often becomes a deadly weapon in itself once players have some upgrades. By default, it stuns most enemies for a brief time, incentivizing players to wade into the fray, sometimes bouncing between the heads of several enemies in a row, always narrowly avoiding a clobbering.
The game design is clever, with chest rewards often inviting thoughtful mulling in exchange for a power-up players already have. Special rooms let players choose from several boons weighed up against the deadliness or achievability of their accompanying challenge modifier. It is full of surprises, too, and not just when it comes to zany enemies and weapons. A few runs ago, I found a heist-spider and got treated to a special cutscene of it stealing an item from the beautifully flouncy shopkeeper when I next entered his store.
The game comes with new challenges, weapons, power-ups, enemies, areas, and more with the 1.0 update. Full patch notes are available on Steam. If players haven’t played yet and are a Nuclear Throne-liker, they are in for a treat. Voidigo is available for £16/$19/€18.50 from Steam.
